A new course entitled New Media for the Third Sector begun 7 February and will run until early April 2o11 (Department of Media at Aalto School of Arts & Design).
Study Project description:
This study project explores the role of social media tools and services in increasing the effectiveness of the activities and communication of third sector organizations. The approach is based on design research and prototyping activities carried out collaboratively with a partner organization.
The Partner:
This year, the study project is a collaboration with the Crisis Management Initiative (http://www.cmi.fi/), a Finnish independent non-profit organization, works to resolve conflict and to build sustainable peace. CMI was founded in 2000 by its Chairman President Martti Ahtisaari.
CMI is now seeking to utilize more new media and new media tools to support their work. The solutions can be, for instance, new media tools supporting multi-stakeholder dialogue in conflict environments, systems and processes utilizing audio-visual communications, technics of data-visualization or social media applications.
Learning Outcomes:
- Define design challenges and outputs with a partner organization that operates globally and in challenging environments.
- Manage and implement a design consulting process (communication, strategy, budget, etc).
- Collaborative and participatory design practices and tools.
- Knowledge of current social and new media practices, tools, services and technologies in relationship to activities of third sector organizations
Assessment Methods and Criteria:
Course includes: lectures, fieldwork, concept design and prototyping, pitching of the ideas.
Evaluation criteria is based on:
Attendance to a min of 80% of class meetings, active participation in the discussion/ideation/production process, quality, depth and breath of the final solution proposal, development of team work and skills
